There’s SO much going on in couples sessions: power dynamics, contrasting narratives, cultural assumptions, old wounds, the lack of agreements about household routines—not to mention our own counter-transference.

In this program we’ll examine the architecture of couples, and of couples therapy. What are the building blocks that every successful couple needs—and how do we help people develop them? What are some reliable techniques we can use with couples who won’t cooperate, or when we get stuck? And how can an existential perspective help redirect couples who expect us to do their work for them?

  • Setting & managing patients’ expectations of therapy

  • Enhancing couples’ conflict management

  • Making and keeping agreements
  • Power dynamics and narratives of powerlessness
  • The importance of existential issues
  • What is NOT a sexual problem?
  • Diversity and cultural concerns

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Assess a couple’s power dynamics, and describe the results to the couple
  • Name 3 issues that couples commonly present as sexual issues, which are more effectively treated as something else
  • Teach couples the importance of making and keeping agreements, with illustrations of effective and ineffective agreements
